A deck takes a beating year-round, and small problems have a way of becoming big ones if you ignore them. Catching issues early keeps your family safe and saves you money. Here are five signs it's time to call for a repair.

1. Soft or Spongy Boards

If a board feels soft underfoot or flexes when you step on it, moisture has likely gotten in and started to rot the wood. Soft boards are a tripping hazard and a sign the damage may run deeper into the framing.

2. Wobbly or Loose Railings

Railings are your deck's most important safety feature, especially on raised decks. If they move when you lean on them, the posts or fasteners have worked loose and need to be re-anchored before someone gets hurt.

3. Rusted or Popping Fasteners

Rusty screws, lifting nails, and corroded brackets weaken the whole structure. When hardware fails, boards loosen and connections give out. Swapping in the right fasteners is a quick fix that makes a big difference.

4. Cracked, Splintering, or Warped Wood

Surface cracks and splinters aren't just ugly, they let in more water and speed up decay. Warped boards also create uneven, unsafe footing. Refinishing or replacing the affected boards restores both looks and safety.

5. Wobbling or Leaning Posts

Your support posts carry the load of the entire deck. If they lean, shift, or feel unstable, that's a serious structural concern that should be looked at right away.

If any of these sound familiar, don't wait for the problem to get worse. We offer free inspections and will tell you honestly whether a repair will do the job or whether a rebuild makes more sense.
